BMW iX4 Starts at $66,200 With Up to 428 Miles of Estimated Range

The BMW iX4 made its debut on Wednesday, October 7, with a U.S. starting price of $66,200 plus destination. The fully electric SUV coupe is the third model on BMW’s Neue Klasse platform, and the launch version, the iX4 50 xDrive, carries a preliminary estimated range of up to 428 miles when it arrives in March 2027.

What $66,200 buys

The iX4 50 xDrive uses one motor on each axle for 463 hp and 475 lb-ft of torque. BMW quotes 0 to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds and a top speed of 130 mph. The M Sport package, 20-inch M wheels, and a panoramic glass roof that runs the full length of the cabin are all standard.

The shape is the point. The roofline slopes into a built-in rear spoiler, and BMW says the iX4 cuts through the air with a drag coefficient of 0.23. It measures 188.3 inches long on a 114.1-inch wheelbase, and with the optional hitch it can tow up to 4,400 pounds.

Battery, range, and charging

The battery holds 112.2 kWh of usable energy in BMW’s new sixth-generation cylindrical cells, which BMW says pack 20 percent more energy into the same space than its older prismatic cells. The cells go straight into the pack with no modules, and the pack itself forms the floor of the car. If you want the background on those packs, we covered BMW’s new Gen6 battery plant in Bavaria last week.

On an 800-volt fast charger, the iX4 can take up to 400 kW. BMW says that adds up to 184 miles in 10 minutes, and a 10 to 80 percent stop takes about 21 minutes. At home it charges at up to 15.4 kW, and BMW’s optional wall charger works with the NACS connector. The iX4 also supports bidirectional charging, the same idea behind Tesla’s Powershare home backup, so the battery can power more than the car.

The 428-mile figure comes from BMW’s own testing using EPA procedures, so treat it as an estimate until the EPA rating lands.

How it compares with the iX3

The iX4 is essentially the coupe counterpart to the iX3, and both are built at BMW’s plant in Debrecen, Hungary. The 2027 iX3 50 xDrive starts at $61,500 plus $1,350 destination with an official EPA estimate of up to 434 miles. That makes the iX4 about $4,700 more for the sleeker roofline, with a range estimate that lands within a few miles of its boxier sibling.

That small gap is the interesting part. Coupe SUVs usually give up real range for their looks, and BMW’s early number suggests this one mostly doesn’t. The EPA label will settle it.

Software and driver assistance

Inside, BMW’s Panoramic Vision display spreads information across the bottom of the windshield, paired with a 17.9-inch center screen and an optional 3D head-up display. The new Operating System X is built on Android Open Source, and the voice assistant uses Amazon’s Alexa+ technology. BMW’s Highway Assistant allows attentive hands-free driving on highways at up to 85 mph.

The iX4 M60 xDrive comes next

A faster iX4 M60 xDrive follows the 50 xDrive. BMW rates it at 603 hp and 645 lb-ft, with an estimated 0 to 60 mph time of 3.7 seconds and a governed top speed of 149 mph. BMW says production starts in March 2027 with a staged launch, and it hasn’t announced U.S. pricing or range for the M60 yet.

It’s a busy week for high-end EV reveals, after Jaguar priced its Type 01 at $130,500. The iX4 aims at a much bigger slice of buyers, and its first real test comes when the EPA range and destination fee are published ahead of the March launch.
