Tesla Model 3 official product still for Powershare Home Backup on Model 3 and Model Y

Tesla Powershare Home Backup Comes to New Model 3 and Model Y

Tesla has opened Powershare Home Backup to new Model 3 and Model Y owners who pair the car with Powerwall 3. The company says the vehicle can extend home backup by over two days for a typical U.S. household. Tesla Energy posted the news on October 6, 2026, and Tesla’s Powershare page now lists Model 3 and Model Y alongside Cybertruck for Powerwall-backed home backup.

That is a meaningful step for volume cars. Powershare Home Backup has long been framed around Cybertruck. Today’s update puts the same vehicle-to-home path on Tesla’s two highest-volume models for buyers who already run, or plan to run, a Powerwall 3 home system.

What Tesla announced

On its Powershare FAQ, Tesla says Powershare is currently available for all Cybertruck vehicles, and for all new Model 3 and Model Y ordered on October 1, 2026 or later.

Tesla’s fine print for the U.S. market is more specific. Footnote language on the same page states that all new Model 3 and Model Y ordered in the U.S. and Puerto Rico after October 1, 2026 are capable of Powershare. It also notes that some, but not all, Model 3 and Model Y vehicles produced before October 1, 2026 can support Powershare too. Tesla tells owners to confirm on the car under Software > Additional Vehicle Info > Powershare Support: Enabled.

Tesla Energy’s October 6 post put it in plain language: Powershare Home Backup is now available for new Model 3 and Model Y with Powerwall 3, and can extend home backup by over two days with the vehicle.

Hardware you need

For a home that already has Tesla storage and charging, Tesla says you do not need extra Powershare Gateway hardware. The With-Powerwall path on Tesla’s specs table calls for:

  • A Powerwall 3 system
  • A Universal Wall Connector or Wall Connector 3
  • Bidirectional inverter capability through Tesla’s PCS2 Lite inverter on Model 3 and Model Y (Cybertruck uses PCS2), certified under UL1741 per Tesla’s footnote

Tesla also says Powerwall 2 and Powerwall + Powershare compatibility is coming soon, and that Powerwall compatibility is enabled by an over-the-air update once the gear is in place.

(Cybertruck owners without Powerwall still have the separate Powershare Gateway plus Universal Wall Connector path. That path is not what this Model 3 / Model Y Powerwall announcement is about.)

How much backup Tesla claims

With Powerwall in the mix, Tesla says Model 3 and Model Y can extend your backup duration by over two days. Cybertruck can extend backup by over three days on the same FAQ answer.

Tesla’s estimate is based on an average U.S. home using about 30 kWh per day. Results vary with solar, vehicle model, real energy use, and how full the car’s battery is when backup starts. The published maximum continuous power on the With-Powerwall specs table is 11.52 kW.

In practice, that means the car parked in the driveway becomes another large battery behind Powerwall 3 during an outage, not a replacement for a properly installed home backup system.

Who this is for right now

  • New Model 3 / Model Y shoppers in the U.S. and Puerto Rico ordering after Tesla’s October 1, 2026 cutoff (and checking the on-car Powershare Support line)
  • Existing owners of some pre-cutoff cars that already show Powershare Support enabled
  • Homes with (or ordering) Powerwall 3 plus a compatible Wall Connector 3 or Universal Wall Connector

If you are shopping and care about vehicle-to-home, rely on the order date and the in-car Powershare Support flag, not build-date rumors.

Bottom line

Tesla Powershare Model 3 Model Y support is now live for eligible new orders paired with Powerwall 3, with an official claim of over two days of added backup for a typical ~30 kWh/day U.S. home. Confirm eligibility on the car, and match the home side to Powerwall 3 plus a compatible Wall Connector before you count on driveway backup.
