One-line rule: If you need a vehicle this year and want the Launch Package stack, Performance is the only trim on the road now. If you can wait into late 2026 for Premium or into 2027 for Standard, decide on AWD + cabin extras (Premium) vs price/range (Standard) first – then ask whether $4,000 more for Performance’s power and dampers is worth it.

Buy Standard if: you want the lowest price, you’re fine waiting into 2027, RWD (or optional dual AWD later) covers your weather/towing needs, and you don’t need Matrix lights, Torch, drop glass, or the Premium cabin stack.
Buy Premium if: you want dual AWD and the comfort/lighting package without Performance power, and late 2026 delivery is soon enough. The dual-motor option on Standard Long Range can close the powertrain gap – but Premium still packs the cabin and exterior extras that option alone does not replace.
Towing note: Rivian Support states that when equipped with the Tow Package, R2 tows 4,400 lb. Trim cards on rivian.com/r2 still show 3,500 lb on the base Standard RWD path and 4,400 lb on dual-AWD cards – so treat dual-AWD + Tow as the 4,400 lb path, and base Standard RWD as the lower card figure.

Buy Performance if: you want the vehicle now, you value Launch Package contents (especially lifetime Autonomy+), you want semi-active dampers and the extra drive modes, or the power/0–60 gap matters to you. Off-road geometry is the same across trims (coil, fixed height) – Performance does not raise approach/departure/clearance.
Stay on Premium if: late-2026 timing is fine, 450 hp / 4.6 s is enough, you don’t need Rally/Soft Sand/Launch or yellow calipers, and you’d rather pay Autonomy+ later (or skip it) than lock Performance + Launch now.

Efficiency note (Performance 21″ only so far): Out of Spec constant-speed testing on the sheet shows Wh/mi roughly matching or beating EPA through ~60 mph, then falling off hard by 80 mph – expected for an adventure SUV with 9.6 in clearance vs low aero crossovers. Charging (as of Oct 2, 2026): Every R2 has a NACS port. Rivian’s own pages (rivian.com/r2, R2: Fast Charging) quote +150 miles in about 15 minutes and 10–80% in under 30 minutes under optimal conditions – they do not publish a peak kW figure on those pages. Independent instrumented tests (e.g. Car and Driver) report Rivian claiming ~230 kW peak and measuring ~226–227 kW in practice; treat peak kW as third-party / press reporting unless Rivian posts it on rivian.com. Home Level 2: Rivian’s Wall Charger (NACS) is rated 11.5 kW on a 240V single-phase circuit (Gear Shop); Rivian’s home-charging story rounds that to ~11 kW / up to 38 mi/hr for R2.

Does Standard get dual-motor AWD?
Yes as an option on the Long Range path (450 hp, 4.6 s, All-Terrain). Base Standard Range is RWD 350 hp / 5.9 s.
What’s in the Performance Launch Package?
Per Rivian: lifetime Autonomy+, Tow package, Rivian Green anodized key fob, and Launch Green as a paid exterior upgrade. Rivian markets Launch Package with Performance for a limited time – confirm on configure before you order.
Is destination fee included in the starting prices?
No. As of Oct 2, 2026, Rivian’s R2 lease examples list a $1,495 destination fee on top of the starting price (taxes and other fees also apply).
What happens to Autonomy+ after the 60-day trial?
Per Rivian Support: $2,500 one-time or $49.99/mo. A one-time purchase stays with the vehicle on ownership transfer. Lifetime Autonomy+ is included with Performance Launch Package while that limited-time offer remains.
Is off-road ability trim-gated?
Geometry and clearance are shared. Performance adds semi-active dampers and Rally / Soft Sand / Launch modes; Premium adds All-Terrain vs Standard’s base four modes (All-Terrain on Standard dual AWD option).
Usable kWh on Standard Range?
Still unpublished on Rivian’s pages and our sheet. Don’t trust third-party guesses until Rivian publishes it.
