Eyes-off (L3 goal)
Hands-off / eyes-off Level 3–class capability targeted for 2027 on higher-capability hardware. Not available today. Needs Rivian software + regulation. Later
Robotaxi path (L4)
Level 4 robotaxi / personal L4 targeted 2028 with Uber partnership (not an owner ADAS feature on current early R2s). Later

Driver still drives. Free Rivian Autonomy Platform features (Highway Assist, Co-steer, Drive Styles, safety ADAS) are hands-on / supervised on limited mapped highways. Real-world testing

Efficiency · R2 Performance

Out of Spec ran constant-speed and city-sim loops on an R2 Performance (EPA combined 320 Wh/mi / 32 kWh/100 mi, 105 MPGe, 330 mi range, city 114 / hwy 96) on a hot, dry summer day in North Carolina, with outside temperatures up to about 98°F the same weekend as their 70 mph range test. Packs were cooled to ambient, tires set to 42 PSI cold, climate on auto at 68°F, drive mode Conserve, and each speed run as an out-and-back so elevation and wind largely cancel. Tested is pack energy use; Displayed is the trip computer. Full methodology and runs are in their efficiency video.

Wh/mi (lower is better) vs EPA 320 · fall-off starts above ~60 mph · mi/kWh from Tested
Test Displayed Wh/mi Tested Wh/mi ≈ mi/kWh (from tested) vs EPA 320
50 mph 250 248.9 4.0 22% better
60 mph 317 317.2 3.2 1% better · last ≤ EPA
70 mph 324 324.9 3.1 1.5% worse · first below EPA
80 mph 406.5 409.2 2.4 28% worse · steep fall-off
City sim 294.1 298.5 3.4 7% better
70 mph: I-95 traffic / slipstream (softest highway point). City sim: stop-and-go · Conserve front clutch disconnect available. 10% challenge: ~93 mi after 15-min DC from ~10% · then ~2.2 mi/kWh (~455 Wh/mi) cruise.

Not a low-slung crossover · speed fall-off: R2 is an adventure SUV with 9.6 in ground clearance, a taller body (floor to roof), and a larger frontal area than curvy, aerodynamic crossovers such as the Tesla Model Y—so Wh/mi matchups with pavement-first EVs are not apples-to-apples. Aero drag (∝ speed²) shows up most above the table’s ~60–70 mph EPA crossover; that is the form-factor trade, not a mystery gap. DC charging remains a strong R2 point.

Pack energy, one test day. EPA kWh/100 mi is wall energy and may use different test paths. Your route, climate, wheels, and load will vary.
